Abstract : Context sensitive system which helps in the interaction of inhabitants with the environment through embedded smart devices is the highlight of any smart community. The paper focuses on the design and development of a service oriented communication architecture for communication within a home/building developing a Building Area Network (BAN) for selected smart services. The heart of the paper is the technology development for these systems in terms of data exchange messages, message data formats, and protocol interoperability and coexistence studies with the help of a suitable communication architecture. Communication technologies like Ethernet, Power Line Carrier Communication (PLCC), Wi-Fi and ZigBee are simulated in network simulation softwares ns2 and NetSim, for a selected topology and operational scenarios based on the data format, for performance analysis. The performance analysis of technologies for various smart services and implementation of interoperable communication architecture in the context of a smart home will help in development of ICT infrastructure for smart cities. © 2018 IEEE.
