AMMACHI Labs Advances Sustainable Seaweed Farming Through Digital Innovation in Coastal Tamil Nadu

Blue is the New Pink Initiative Strengthens Sustainable Seaweed Farming Practices

As part of the Blue is the New Pink initiative led by AMMACHI Labs and the Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality, a series of field activities were conducted across the coastal villages of Thirupalaikudi, Sambai, Soliyakudi, and Thondi in Tamil Nadu to strengthen sustainable and technology-enabled seaweed farming practices.

The initiative focused on empowering coastal communities through the integration of digital technologies, hands-on training, and sustainable aquaculture practices. Farming materials were distributed to beneficiaries to support and expand local seaweed cultivation efforts.

Digital Traceability & Monitoring Platform

A major highlight of the field activities was the introduction of a digital traceability and monitoring platform developed by the Rural Technologies team at AMMACHI Labs. The system enables real-time field documentation and cultivation tracking, helping improve transparency, streamline farm monitoring, and support data-driven decision-making within coastal aquaculture ecosystems.

The field visits also featured the active participation of Alessandro Tazartes, who collaborated closely with Venkatesh P. Together, they interacted with farmers, local community members, and government agricultural officials to better understand the socio-economic and technical dimensions of coastal seaweed cultivation and emerging market systems.

Hands-on Demonstrations & Training Sessions

  • Seaweed attachment techniques for monoline systems
  • Seaweed cultivation methods using raft systems
  • Use of digital tools for field-level monitoring
  • Real-time cultivation data collection practices

Alessandro’s enthusiastic involvement and willingness to work directly alongside coastal communities — including participating in sea-based field activities — brought additional energy and encouragement to the initiative, fostering stronger community engagement and collaboration.

These activities reflect AMMACHI Labs’ continued commitment toward combining advanced digital innovation, community participation, and sustainable aquaculture practices to strengthen coastal livelihoods, environmental stewardship, and climate resilience across vulnerable coastal regions.
