Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Blue is the New Pink initiative continues to demonstrate how research-driven innovation can transform coastal livelihoods while promoting environmental sustainability. Through its Ocean Farming programme in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, the team is advancing women-led seaweed cultivation and integrated coastal farming by translating scientific research into practical, scalable solutions.
Recent field trials conducted in Thondi, Soliyakudi, and Sambai have focused on refining locally adapted cultivation techniques for indigenous Gracilaria seaweed. By evaluating different farming methods under real coastal conditions, researchers identified the most effective cultivation practices suited to the local environment. These findings strengthen the scientific foundation for expanding sustainable seaweed farming across India’s coastline.
A key strength of the initiative is its close collaboration with local women seaweed farmers. The Ocean Farming team worked alongside community members during harvesting activities, evaluating cultivation performance while providing hands-on training in commercial Gracilaria farming and post-harvest handling techniques.
These practical training sessions are helping women develop the technical expertise needed to establish resilient, income-generating seaweed enterprises, contributing to long-term economic independence and community resilience.
The programme also achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of its first Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) pilot harvest. The harvest produced 923.65 kilograms of Asian seabass, generating ₹5,93,706 in revenue.
In addition to its commercial success, the harvest yielded premium-quality fish selected by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) for broodstock development, highlighting the high quality of the production system and its potential for sustainable aquaculture.
These achievements demonstrate how applied research, community participation, and technical innovation can work together to create locally adapted solutions for sustainable coastal development. By strengthening women’s livelihoods, improving environmentally responsible aquaculture practices, and enhancing coastal ecosystem resilience, the initiative is contributing to the growth of a more inclusive and sustainable blue economy.
