ISRO Sponsored National Seminar Organised by ASE Coimbatore

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore, conducted an ISRO sponsored national seminar on “Techniques and Applications of Hyperspectral Image Analysis” on April 19-20, 2016.

The speakers at the event were: Dr. Rama Rao Nidamanuri, Associate Professor, Department of Earth and Space Sciences, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram; Ms. A.M. Ramiya, Reader, Department of Earth and Space Sciences Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram; Dr. B. S Daya Sagar, Professor, Systems Science and Information Unit Indian Statistical Institute Bangalore Centre; Dr. Saroj Kumar Meher, Assistant Professor, Systems Science and Information Unit Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore Centre.

The participants were research scholars and faculty members, as well as students from various institutions. They included: National Institute of Technology(NIT) Trichy; Sathyabama University; Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University; Karpagam University; Kumaraguru College of Technology; Sri Krishna College of Tech; Kongu Engineering College; College of Engineering, Karungappally, Kerala; and Amrita School of Engineering.

Dr. Rama Rao, in the first session, gave an introduction to hyper spectral imaging and talked about material/target identification by remote sensing, algorithms for hyper spectral image classification and advanced methods for hyperspectral image classification.

In the next session, “Integration of Hyperspectral and LiDAR”, Ms. A.M. Ramiya gave an introduction of LiDAR and focussed on the topics of LiDAR for geospatial applications, 3D modeling of trees and integration of hyperspectral and LiDAR.

The following session, “Advanced Spatial Statistical Methods for High Dimensional Satellite Data Processing and Analysis Mathematical Morphology for Hyper Spectral Image”, was headed by Dr. B. S Daya Sagar. The topics of discussion were Binary Mathematical Morphology, Grayscale Morphology, Graph Mathematical Morphology and Adaptive Mathematical Morphology.
The final session, by Dr. Saroj Kumar Meher, was titled “Fuzzy Sets, Granular Computing on Hyperspectral Images”. Granular computing, structural representation, ensample of GNN, knowledge-encoded GNN and application to land use/cover classification were discussed.

Major applications areas for HSI using mathematical morphology and granular neural networks were discussed in the seminar, through which current research problems were identified for further research. HSI in remote sensing is developing field, especially LiDAR image processing, which will be very useful for developing smart cities in India, The seminar gave a good introduction to the field of hyper spectral image analysis, along with an insight into rich applications. This seminar was useful for more research openings and opportunities.
