President Launches Amrita’s A-View on Aakash

The latest version of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s e-learning platform, A-View 3.0, running on Aakash 2 tablet, was officially launched by none other than the Honorable President Shri. Pranab Mukherjee on November 11, 2012.

The launch was part of an event organized in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, to commemorate National Education Day.

Together, Aakash 2 and A-View 3.0 will help bring high quality education to every deserving student in India through e-learning. As such, the launch represented an important step forward for the National Mission on Education throug Information and Communication Technology.

This National Mission is supported by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development.

Others present at the launch included Dr. M. M. Pallam Raju, Union Minister for Human Resources and Development; Dr. Shashi Tharoor and Shri. Jitin Prasada, Ministers of State for Human Resources and Development; Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO and Dr. Karan Singh, India’s representative to UNESCO.

This event was also broadcast live to 250 remote centers in India. Nearly 13,400 teachers at these remote centers were participating in a two-day workshop during November 10-11 to learn more about and begin leveraging the immense possibilities Aakash and A-View now offered to them.

These teachers also received free Aakash tablets with A-View installed.

“Education is the tool for social transformation,” stated the Honorable President, addressing the thousands across the nation.

Indeed. Now students will have the opportunity to “attend” classes, view lectures and course material, take quizzes, through their own tablet computer. Available at a price of only Rs. 1130 for students, Aakash can stream videos, play multimedia content, and can otherwise aid learning.

The latest version of A-View includes several powerful features. The 2D and 3D viewers enable presenters to upload animations and other objects, to help practically explain fundamental concepts. Video editing allows a moderator real-time control of a video lecture. Security checks such as face-recognition are built in. The audio and video quality is greatly improved.

“A-View 3.0 comes packed with various knowledge sharing modules that are unique. It provides better performance and reliability. Large classes can be handled more easily. We developed A-View to bridge the gap between students and teachers, since the Indian higher education sector still suffers from a dearth of qualified and experienced faculty,” explained Prof. Kamal Bijilani, Director, Amrita E Learning Research Lab.

A-View is available free of cost to all higher educational institutions across the country. It is currently deployed at over 1500 colleges across India. Most recently, A-View was used by IIT Bombay to train 10,000 teachers in Research Methodologies through online sessions.
