International collaboration continues to strengthen community-driven coastal livelihood initiatives as Dr. Michael Rosenfeld, a marine biologist and science educator from Israel, joins the Ocean Farming Team of AMMACHI Labs and Amrita’s Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (CWEGE) to support the ongoing seaweed cultivation programme in Andhra Pradesh.
Bringing extensive expertise in marine ecology, environmental education, and sustainable seaweed development, Dr. Rosenfeld has been working closely with beneficiary women, local fishing communities, scientists, and field teams to enhance community-led seaweed farming initiatives. His visit focuses on strengthening sustainable cultivation practices while exploring innovative approaches to improve both environmental and socioeconomic outcomes.
Throughout his engagement, Dr. Rosenfeld has participated in field assessments of existing cultivation sites, evaluated seaweed growth and production techniques, advised on pond management practices, and explored opportunities for product value addition. He has also collaborated with hatchery scientists, conducted feasibility assessments of prospective cultivation locations, and provided practical recommendations to improve productivity, resilience, and long-term livelihood opportunities for coastal communities.
For many years, Dr. Rosenfeld has combined scientific research with environmental education, inspiring students and communities to understand marine ecosystems, sustainability, and ecological stewardship. His work has consistently demonstrated the transformative potential of seaweed cultivation—not only as an environmentally sustainable industry, but also as an effective tool for restoring marine ecosystems, strengthening coastal economies, generating income opportunities for women, and contributing to climate change mitigation without requiring freshwater, fertilizers, or agricultural land.
Reflecting on his experience working alongside Amrita’s community development initiatives, Dr. Rosenfeld emphasized the value of knowledge exchange and collaborative learning.
