In an attempt to raise awareness about eye donation, Young Indians of Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore (ASB) conducted an “Eye Donation Awareness Campaign” at Sri Krishna Hall in the campus on October 24, 2016. Ahalia Foundation Eye Hospital collaborated with YiNet for the campaign.
Dr. Shama from Ahalia Foundation delivered a talk on the topic. She focused on key factors that are important for a donor in donating his/her eyes. Dr. Shama pointed out, that except the donor eyes of those who succumbed to diseases such as HIV/ AIDS, hepatitis, and cancer, eyes donated by others could be harvested. The presentation enriched the students with a detailed knowledge about eye donation.
After the talk, a free eye check-up was conducted for the students and faculty at the venue.
Dr. R. Raghu Raman, Chairman, ASB Coimbatore, appreciated the efforts to create awareness of the importance of eye donation. “There is an intense demand-supply gap in the eye donation sector. It is difficult to find a proper match, as there are not many donors. It is refreshing to see our students take an initiative to address this issue. We look forward to conducting wider campaigns in the future.”
Dr. Venkitaraman, Faculty-in-charge of Amrita Vision Club and Dr. Suresh M., Assistant Professor, ASB and the faculty in-charge of the campus YiNet, also shared some inspiring words. In addition to the students of ASB, students of the Amrita Vision Club also participated in the event.
