The chapter, titled “Marketing and Branding of Calicut as a Smart City Destination” (Chapter 14, pages 359-389), uses the basic framework of creating value, communicating value and delivering value to explain the marketing process of Calicut (a district in Kerala, India) as a smart city destination. It identifies the four elements that are unique to the cultural and geographic aspects of Calicut -- Calicut cuisine, Uru (traditional vessel), Kalaripayattu (traditional martial art form) and Calicut trade hub – and derives their value propositions creating other aspects of the brand charter.

Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore (ASB) turned into a big showground last week as the campus celebrated Utsav, its vibrant intra-college, week-long cultural festival. Martial arts, music and dance performances, street play, mime, creative writing, painting, debate, cricket, athletes, and jamming sessions performed by the students filled the five days of extravaganza from the 27th- 31st August, 2016. “It was a great platform for us to showcase our talents. The five days encouraged us to present ourselves at the best, unknowingly unleashing our hidden skills,” commented Nilufer, a student from Class of 2018. Dr. Sanjay Banerji, Professor Emeritus, ASB inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp. The students competed as four teams – Aryans, Mayans, Aztecs, and Spartans - each led by one member. Among the groups, Aztecs emerged as the winners, followed by Spartans occupying the second position and Mayans as the third.

Earlier this month, Dr. Bodo Eickhoff, Senior Vice-President of Sales & Marketing at Molecular Diagnostics, a large multi-national pharmaceutical company, visited the Amrita University, Amritapuri campus, and addressed the students, faculty, and staff in a seminar titled “Integrating Sciences from a Holistic Perspective: How Human Microbiome and Soil Food Web Might Work Together”. An expert in many fields, Dr. Eickhoff initially focused on research, working on HIV co-receptors and cancer therapy, but then moving on to an industry which revolved around producing novel biotechnology products and getting patents. He took an even larger step away from his starting point when he went into manufacturing. Dr. Eickhoff explained that these radical changes in his career provided him a chance to view situations from different perspectives. Science was more complex and based on rationality and logic, whereas business was linear and required an aspect of socially interacting with people. Through these changes, Dr. Eickhoff understood that the biotechnology industry is not solely about making a product, but is also about customers who are human beings.
