Amrita LEAP, the outreach vertical of the Amrita School of Spiritual and Cultural Studies (ASSCS), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri, is offering  an Eight Level Graded Certificate Program in Bharatanatyam. This unique initiative is designed for students who aspire to pursue their passion for classical Indian dance through systematic, structured, and holistic training. Successful completion of each level earns participants a certificate from Amrita University.

Program Highlights

  • Comprehensive Eight-Level Curriculum:
    The program is divided into eight progressive levels, each building upon the skills and knowledge acquired in previous grades. The curriculum covers both practical and theoretical aspects of Bharatanatyam, ensuring a well-rounded education in the art form.
  • Mode of learning and teaching: Students applying to this certificate program should be trained under a dance teacher. Students can learn the practical and theory syllabus in their dance teacher’s style or ‘baani’. Detailed syllabus will be shared upon enrollment.
  • Structured Learning Path:
    Each level is designed to be completed in one year, allowing students to progress at a steady and manageable pace. The program is suitable for students from Standard I to XII, making it accessible to young learners who wish to start their journey in classical dance.
  • Certification:
    Students will receive a certificate of completion  from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham upon the successful completion of each level, providing formal recognition of their skills and dedication

Dr. Araty H. Shetty

Dr. Araty H. Shetty

Dr. Araty has carried forward the traditions of ancient Indian dance forms, especially Bharatanatyam for over 45 years. She is an exponent of the Pandanallur School of Bharatanatyam. She holds a Doctoral Degree in Dance from SNDT University, Mumbai. She is the daughter of Guru Mrs. Jayalakshmi Alva ( on whom Karnataka state conferred its highest honor for dance, the Shantala Award).

Pranav P

Pranav holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Postgraduate degree in Manufacturing and Automation. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D in Tribology at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus. Pranav is a first-class Diploma holder in Bharatanatyam from the Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, Tamil Nadu. He also completed his Post graduation (M.F.A) in Bharatanatyam from Tamil University, Thanjavur. He completed the A-grade Diploma Certificate course with distinction in Kerala Natanam from the first batch of Guru Gopinath Natanagramam. With a remarkable 20 years of experience in dance studies and as an instructor, his exceptional talent has been recognized through various awards, including the JC Daniel Best Performer Award, the Natyaprabha Prathibha Puraskar, Dr. BR Ambedkar National Fellowship Award and the Film Academy Best Teacher Excellence Award. Pranav continues to inspire the performing arts through research and teaching that weave cultural heritage into dance education and through judging roles at state-level dance competitions.

Bio

Aswathi Chandran is an Assistant Professor at the School of Spiritual and Cultural Studies, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus. She holds a Master’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering as her primary qualification. From this background, she brings a distinctive analytical lens to the study of movement, cognition, and pedagogy. She is a trained classical dancer with over 25 years of practice across Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam. She holds a Diploma in Mohiniyattam and is currently pursuing her M.A. in Mohiniyattam, alongside a certificate in Nāṭyaśāstra from Central Sanskrit University, which grounds her doctoral research in classical dance theory. Her Ph.D. work examines the intersection of Indian Knowledge Systems, and spatial cognition in learning, investigating how the pedagogical structures of Indian Classical Dance can inform contemporary approaches to embodied learning, contributing to the broader vision of situating Indian Knowledge Systems within academic frameworks. She has also applied art-integrated methods to teach Itihasas such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata to engineering students.

Pranav P. is an Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus. He holds a postgraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. As a passionate exponent of Indian classical dance, Pranav is a first-class Diploma holder in Bharatanatyam and holds a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Bharatanatyam from Tamil University, Thanjavur. He has also completed the A-grade Diploma Certificate course in Kerala Natanam with distinction from the first batch of Guru Gopinath Natanagramam. With over 23 years of experience as a performer, instructor, choreographer, and mentor, Pranav has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Nritha Yuva Prathibha Puraskar, Natyaprabha Prathibha Puraskar, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Fellowship Award, and the National Film Academy Best Teacher Excellence Award, among many others. Pranav continues to inspire the performing arts through research and teaching that weave cultural heritage into dance education and through judging roles at state-level and inter-state dance competitions.
