Encouraged by Amma’s message that everyone should be able to eat vegetables grown organically at least once in a week, the college students at Amrita University’s Amritapuri campus have started an organic vegetable garden using natural methods of cultivation. The garden is flourishing with the growth of colorful, delicious produce, including spinach, okra, tomatoes, tapioca, green chilies, cauliflower, pumpkins, and bananas. The students take turns coming every day to water and tend to the plants, with Wednesdays set aside for all the students to work together. When a plant begins to produce fruits or vegetables, the students are always keen to offer these first gifts of nature to Amma.

The Cultural Association of Amrita University’s Amritapuri campus, SAMSKRITI, organized a colourful program on February 4, 2015, to offer felicitations to participants and prize winners at the South India Inter-University Youth Festival held in December 2014. Students had won prizes in five events: musical percussion, group music (Indian), collage, quiz and photography. Padma Sree, Sri. Shekhar Kapoor, the noted Actor, Film Director and Producer, was the Chief Guest. Dr. Neena Prasad, the well known dancer, and Br Sankarachaitanya, Medical Director, Amrita School of Ayurveda, were the other dignitaries present on the occasion.  In association with Amrita SPICMACAY team, the function was graced by a scintillating Mohiniyattam performance by Dr. Neena Prasad that kept the audience spell-bound.  Sri. Shekar Kapoor also did the honours by releasing the latest issue of Amritapuri campus’ quarterly student journal SAMVIT. This issue of the journal contained articles on various topics dealing with the past, present and future of our country. It was indeed a memorable evening.

Amrita Sanjeevani, the Seva Association of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Amritapuri Campus was formed to provide an opportunity to students and staff at Amrita University to engage in social service. When the tsunami hit the area on December 26, 2004, students and staff who were present at that time pitched in wholeheartedly to do the needful. Chancellor Amma, seeing their desire to serve, suggested that a seva association be formally launched and Amrita Sanjeevani was born. “Pray with your heart, serve with your hands”, a quote from Amma’s tsunami message became the motto of the organization.

One of the top reasons for students, as well as parents, in selecting and preferring Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham as the study destination over other top-rung universities and colleges, is the guaranteed peace-of-mind factor that it provides: placements! Of course, there may be other important aspects like a lush-green, serene, sprawling campus at the foot of the hills, which renders it an ideal ambience for the pursuit of knowledge; or the scores of qualified faculty experts from the best institutions of the world.  The infrastructure is great too, and includes the university’s wi-fi campus, libraries, laboratories and workshops.  The university’s Chancellor and Pro Chancellor would emphasise that the key differentiator at Amrita is the value system that is imparted in today’s fast-paced world, to help students with not just an education for a living, but also an education for life.

A yellow bus emblazoned with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham slowly navigated the bumpy roads of Attappadi. Abruptly it screeched to a halt and a frenzied search took place within as young people searched through boxes of clothes. A tribal woman with a small child and an elderly lady were standing along the road near the bus. “She needs a sari.” “Find something for a two year old.”  “Where are the towels?” “She looks thin. Where is the nutrition supplement?” Quickly the team assembled a pile of useful items, leaped out of the bus and with a big smile presented the clothes and supplement to the amazed locals. The women smiled and the child looked totally puzzled. A brief explanation that they were from Amma, how to use the supplement and a small picture of Amma and they jumped back in the bus and careened down the road, looking for the next needy person and poor villages.
