Dr. Akhil Sivan currently serves as Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, School of Arts and Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri. He completed his Master's degree in Advanced Organic Chemistry from S. D. College, Alappuzha (University of Kerala) in 2008. He joined Amrita in 2009 as a Junior Project Fellow in the Department of Chemistry in a research project sponsored by DST, New Delhi. He also worked there as a Teaching Assistant. He worked as a Research Assistant at VALUE Virtual Labs, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (for one year). He worked as Assistant Professor (on Contract) at St. Michael’s College, Cherthala (for one year) and also at T. K. M. M. College, Nangiarkulangara (for 2 years).

Dr. Akhil completed his Ph. D. from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in 2018 in the broad subject area of “Synthetic Organic Chemistry”, where special emphasis has been given for the synthesis of heterocycles and spirocycles and for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds using Cerium(IV) Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) as a single electron transfer oxidant.

He has two international research publications and several international and national conference publications to his credit. He also co-guided 4 M. Phil. students and 8 M. Sc. students towards the successful completion of their projects.

He has secured 3rd rank in the university examination conducted by University of Kerala for undergraduate courses. He was the recipient of Certificate of Appreciation from Amrita in the years 2012 and 2014 for getting international research publication.

His research interests include synthetic organic chemistry, solid supported organic synthesis, natural product isolation, characterization and its synthesis, heterogeneous catalyst mediated organic synthesis etc.

A mild and efficient protocol for the synthesis of vicinal tricarbonyl compounds from β-dicarbonyls in a single step using cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate as a catalytic oxidant is described. Ease of execution, wide substrate scope and the suitability for the synthesis of commercially important compounds like ninhydrin, alloxan and oxoline make this reaction particularly noteworthy.
