Amrita Research on Cerebellum Modeling at IISc’s Bangalore Cognition Workshop

Dr. Shyam Diwakar, Lab Director of the Computational Neuroscience and Neurophysiology Laboratory and Associate Professor of Amrita School of Biotechnology, was invited to present at the 5th Bangalore Cognition Workshop 2018 held at IISc from June 17-29, 2018. The 5th Bangalore Cognition Workshop is a prestigious brain school where “Minds Meets the Brain” and is sponsored by the International Brain Research Organisation, IUSSTF. A selected group of researchers and students attended the workshop that included invited speakers from India and abroad. The workshop had several modules and this talk was part of the motor system module.

Titled “Multiscale Modeling of Cerebellum”, the talk by Dr. Shyam Diwakar on June 25th featured Amrita research on modeling cerebellum and its circuits using mathematical models. The talk highlighted motor learning theory and how the cerebellum is critical to movement planning and coordination. Using various types of mathematical modeling methods, the talk showed how various circuits process sensory and motor patterns and how such processes are nonlinear.

Additionally, Amrita PhD student, Arathi Rajendran, had the honour of being selected to attend the workshop.
