International Conference on Embedded Systems 2014 (ICES 2014)

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore campus organized an international conference on Embedded Systems, ICES 2014 from July 3-5, 2014. The event was organized in association with KTH, Sweden, MDH, Sweden and technical sponsor IEEE. A preconference tutorial on two embedded system platforms, viz. Wind River Vx Works and TI C 2000, were conducted by Mr. Rajesh Lalwani, Wind River Systems and Srujan Babu G., Corel Technologies.  

Addressing the delegates during the inaugural ceremony, Dr. P. Venkat Rangan,  Vice Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, highlighted the significance of embedded systems and emphasized the need of such a conference. Dr. T. N. Padmanabhan Nambiar, Former Chairperson, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering; Dr. K. C. Sindhu Thampatty, Chairperson, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering; Dr. S. Krishnamorthy, Registrar, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham; Dr. Rajeev Thottapillil, Professor, KTH, Sweden and Dr. Sasikumar Punnekkat, Professor, MDH, Sweden were a few among the distinguished dignitaries who graced the occasion with their presence.

In his keynote speech, Dr. Sasikumar Punnekkat, Professor, MDH, Sweden spoke on Dependability Assurance in Safety-critical Embedded Systems.  Dr. N. Vijayrangan, Senior Scientist, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) delivered the keynote address on Multibase Controllers for Mobile and Wireless Communications which highlighted many open areas of research. A keynote on Smart Grids was addressed by Dr. Rajeev Thottapillil, Professor, KTH, Sweden. The numerous research areas at KTH were discussed. Dr. T. R. Padmanabhan, ICES 2014 Conference Chair, spoke about Machine Vision in Automation. He fascinated the delegates to probe the role of vision automation in allied disciplines of engineering.

Panel discussions on the significance and challenges of Embedded Systems in Automation and the practical aspects of Embedded Systems in Smart Grid were also held during the conference. Paper presentations covered topics in VLSI, Embedded Applications, Embedded Applications to Robotics and Networking, Embedded Applications and Real Time Systems, Real Time Systems. 

“The delegates talked highly about the conference which boosted the morale of the dynamic and energetic department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering,” summed up ICES 2014 Conference Chair Dr. T. R. Padmanabhan.
