World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 was observed by Mano Layam – Rhythm of the Mind, Centre for Wellbeing, in collaboration with Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SSBS). 88 participants participated in the event conducted in Ettimadai campus. The programme aimed to promote open conversations around suicide prevention and mental wellbeing, encourage help-seeking and peer support, and foster a campus environment where individuals feel comfortable expressing their emotions and seeking support.
The programme included classroom discussions, personal reflections and sharing, conversations on mental wellbeing, and the Wear Yellow initiative. Students, faculty and staff participated by wearing yellow as a symbolic gesture of support for suicide prevention, while yellow ribbons were distributed across the campus community. A Words of Affirmation activity encouraged participants to share messages of kindness, encouragement and support. The programme also introduced students to Mano Layam and invited them to become part of its student volunteer community.
The initiative provided students and members of the campus community with opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations, listen to one another and reflect on the importance of connection, empathy and support. It also strengthened awareness of Mano Layam as a campus mental health resource and encouraged continued engagement with mental wellbeing initiatives. The programme resulted in 30 students registering for the Mano Layam Student Volunteer Community.
Overall, the programme reinforced the importance of moving beyond “I’m fine” and creating spaces where individuals can speak openly about their experiences and seek support without judgement. It highlighted the value of peer support, active listening and compassionate communication in promoting a more connected and supportive campus community.
