Evaluating Coastal Salinity Intrusion from Groundwater over-extraction, Coastal Wetland Dynamics and Sea Level Rise using Remote Sensing

The study aims for a comprehensive analysis of the impact of groundwater extraction, wetland dynamics, and sea level rise on salinity intrusion in coastal aquifers. It will monitor shoreline changes and wetland dynamics while conducting 3D finite element solute transport modeling in the coastal area. This modeling will identify the extent of seawater intrusion into the freshwater groundwater system. In zones of extreme groundwater extraction, land subsidence analysis will be performed using SAR remote sensing, followed by DGPS-based validation. The project will analyze groundwater salinity intrusion in Chennai’s urban area and Munroe Island in Kerala using remote sensing and model-based approaches, supplemented by geophysical surveys such as Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
