The prediction of Effective Thermal Conductivity (ETC) of two phase porous materials is becoming more important to evaluate its suitability in various engineering applications. This article has aimed to develop the geometry dependent resistance models using Hexagon and Octagon by considering the effects of contact resistance, conductivity ratio, concentration, natural convection due to buoyancy effects, pressure dependent Knudsen effects and radiation effects due to elevated temperature. The general analytical expressions have been derived based on unit cell parallel isotherm approach for hexagon and Octagon geometries. The expressions are validated for its correctness using standard models and compared with wide range of experimental data for various geometrical configurations and at different temperatures. The results have declared the suitability of the present models in predicting the ETC of various two phase materials at any kind of ambient conditions.

Most of the thermal design systems involve two phase materials and analysis of such systems requires detailed understanding of the thermal characteristics of the two phase material. This article aimed to develop geometry dependent unit cell approach model by considering the effects of all primary parameters (conductivity ratio and concentration) and secondary parameters (geometry, contact resistance, natural convection, Knudsen and radiation) for the estimation of effective thermal conductivity of two-phase materials. The analytical equations have been formulated based on isotherm approach for 2-D and 3-D spatially periodic medium. The developed models are validated with standard models and suited for all kind of operating conditions. The results have shown substantial improvement compared to the existing models and are in good agreement with the experimental data.

This paper proposes a flat wire electrode technique in the flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process. E70T1 electrode was selected for the study. Flat shaped electrode can improve the quality of weld, in terms of mechanical properties. It also enhances the heat input and penetration. For this approach, experiments are carried out with varying size of flat wire electrodes. The result indicates that, the proposed technique of flat wire electrode can be used effectively to improve the weld bead quality. Mechanical properties are analyzed and compared with results produced by regular electrode in FCA welding. It inferred that, use of flat wire electrode in FCA welding gives 12.5% greater bending strength, 11% of greater impact strength and 8.45% of less hardness over the regular electrode in FCA welding.

In this work, metallic titanium film was deposited on graded alloy of AA7075 for different deposition time of 180, 300, 420 and 900 seconds at substrate temperature from 100°C - 400°C using DC magnetron sputtering method. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the coated Ti thin films are analyzed. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDX) result reveals homogeneous dispersion of Ti thin film on the substrate. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the Ti thin film shows (101) as the preferred orientation with HCP structure and the surface morphology was characterized using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) for Ti film deposited with film thickness (154 µm) at higher substrate temperature (400°C). It is found that hardness, scratch resistance, adhesion, surface roughness and corrosion resistance of the Ti Deposited film exhibit significant improvement for MEMS Application. This paper describes the relationships between the macrostructural characteristics of weld beads and the welding parameters in Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) using a flat wire electrode. Bead-on-plate welds were produced with a flat wire electrode and different combinations of input parameters (i.e., welding current, welding speed, and flat wire electrode orientation). The macrostructural characteristics of the weld beads, namely, deposition, bead width, total bead width, reinforcement height, penetration depth, and depth of HAZ were investigated. A mapping technique was employed to measure these characteristics in various segments of the weldment zones. Results show that the use of a flat wire electrode improves the depth-to-width (D/W) ratio by 16.5 % on average compared with the D/W ratio when a regular electrode is used in GMAW. Furthermore, a fuzzy logic model was established to predict the effects of the use of a flat electrode on the weldment shape profile with varying input parameters. Both medical and engineering sciences play a vital role in human health diagnose and treatment. In this scientific world, the technology of alternative bone scaffold is one of the remedial sources for bone loss treatment. This research paper focuses on the design and analysis of porous scaffold made of additive manufacturing process. Various types of biocompatible materials with different characteristics are used for this bone scaffold. In order to have high load bearing capacity, a material composition of biocompatible Polyamide (PA) combined with Hydroxyapatite (HA) is used in this research work. HA has the character of greater cell seeding growth of tissue cells and hence added in the composition. The porous scaffold models with different configuration of cubical pore, spherical pore, shifted cubical pore, shifted spherical pore are designed using Solidworks software with a pore size of 800 microns and the porosity ranging from 40 {%} to 70 {%}. All the CAD models are analyzed using ANSYS software. Based on the static structural analysis, the shifted cubical scaffold posses lesser stress concentration, and thus selected for fabrication using Selective Laser Sintering machine. The specimens are fabricated in three different build orientations and the load bearing strength is found out using experimentation. The different material composition of 100 {%}PA, 95 {%}PA: 5 {%}HA, 90 {%}PA: 10 {%}HA and 85 {%}PA: 15 {%}HA are considered for this study.</p>

The roof slab of the nuclear reactor supports all the components of the reactor. Roof slab is essentially a box structure with top and bottom plates interconnected by vertical shells and radial stiffeners welded to them. The gap between the top and bottom plates is filled with concrete that provides biological and thermal shielding in the top axial direction of the reactor. The 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) is designed based on the Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) which are categorized under level A and level D loadings respectively. The primary objective of this work is to optimize the design of the roof slab and to predict and ascertain the structural integrity of the optimized roof slab under static, harmonic and seismic loading conditions. Regression models for critical design parameters are developed and are used in the optimization algorithm. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Today, organ and tissue transplantation remains one of the most important while complex options in order to restore or enhance life expectancy. Though it is a complex option, it is more preferable than other restorations due to its high success rate. The organ and tissue transplantation bring about the idea to generate bone scaffolds using natural bone like materials to treat bone losses, fractures or any other bone related issues. The increasing number of bone losses, critical-sized bone defects, delayed bone unions in orthopedic, drive the quest for bone tissue regeneration. Permanent bone scaffolds implants are usually made of stainless steel or titanium plates. Despite the high success rate of these scaffolds there are several withdrawals such as rust formation leading to bacterial infection and periodic replacement of these steel plates among children due to the gradual growth of the bone. Hence, to overcome the above issues bio-compatible scaffolds must be designed, developed and implanted without causing any harm to the human body. The developed scaffold should also be porous to allow the growth of tissues and nerve endings which enable the union of the bone. Thus, the scaffold should also withstand the stress and should have adequate load bearing capacity. The pore size should also be sufficient enough such that it allows the penetration of the cells and tissues growth. This research work deals with the design of porous scaffold models with different configuration and the selection of suitable material and manufacturing method. The pore geometry and its arrangement are changed in the scaffold. Pores with a cube, sphere shape and their shifted arrangements are considered for this study. The pore size considered is in the range of 800 microns to 1200 microns and the porosity ranges from 40 % to 70 %. The best configuration must be selected based on the strength requirement.

Abstract The objective of the work is to predict the structural integrity of the roof slab of 500MWe sodium cooled fast reactor (SFR) under static loading conditions. The roof slab is an annular box type structure consisting of top and bottom plates with connecting stiffeners and has been designed to support various components such as control plug, pumps and heat exchangers entering into the main vessel of the reactor. The net static load acting on it is about 3800t under normal condition and about 5000t under design basis earthquake. Experiments on 1/12th scaled down model of the roof slab are carried out and test data is compared with the results of numerical simulation by finite element analysis. The numerical as well as experimental investigations carried out on the model demonstrate the robustness of assumptions made for the analysis carried out towards respecting design code limits as well as raise the confidence on the structural integrity of the roof slab.

Scaled down models are widely used for experimental investigations on huge structures due to the limitation in the capacities of testing facilities, and, moreover, the experimentation on scaled models is less expensive. Also small scale models are often built with materials dissimilar to those of the prototype. However, only few studies have been carried out on the similitude laws for the prototype structures with small scale models built with a different material. In the present study, an attempt has been made to develop a scaling law for models to carry out the free vibration analysis of structures, based on the similitude requirement. The established scaling laws are validated analytically using simple test problems. The similitude relationship between the prototype and the model is validated with the aid of a case study using finite element analysis software.

This paper investigates on the influence of rate of strain and orientation of extrusion direction on the mechanical behaviour of three commercial polymers, viz: High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), and isotactic PolyPropylene (i-PP). Uniaxial tension tests were carried out in specimens cut at three different orientations 00, 450 and 900 with ranges of strain rates varying between 0.01 s-1 and 0.3 s-1. It was found that for all three polymers, an increase in strain rate resulted in a rise of yield strength irrespective of their orientations. At lower strain rates, HDPE and PP undergo an initial yielding, work hardening and eventual failure, whereas ABS undergoes strain softening after initial yielding. As the strain rate increases, work hardening was not much evident, and resulted in early failure. All three polymers exhibited an evident necking at lower strain rate. At higher strain rates, HDPE and PP exhibited an evident neck formation, whereas it was not much evident for ABS. It was noted that the tensile behaviour of HDPE and PP changes from ductile to brittle due to an increase in strain rate. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
