Campus to the United Nations: amFOSS Student Surendran Selected for UNECE Open Source Assignment

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham student and amFOSS contributor KK Surendran is among the selected candidates for a prestigious United Nations Online Volunteer assignment under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), yet another prominent international recognition for Amrita’s student-led open source ecosystem.

Surendran will be contributing to Open Source Software Improvement – eTIR National Application – a globally relevant software platform maintained under UNECE. The application helps governments to implement the TIR Convention, an international framework for the secure and efficient cross-border movement of goods with minimal customs interference.

Surendran will be directly involved in the eTIR National Application codebase during the 12-week assignment period by implementing software improvements, ensuring the functionality of web applications and services, updating technical documentation and project wikis, and proposing further enhancements based on his contributions.

The eTIR platform is used in actual international trade and transport systems, so the assignment offers a unique opportunity for a student contributor to work with software infrastructure that enables cross-border governance and logistics on a global scale.

The recruitment of Surendran through a competitive international method is a reflection of the amFOSS, the Student-Run open-source community of Amrita, gaining more visibility worldwide. Over the years amFOSS has developed a strong culture of collaborative development, where students get to contribute significantly to major open source projects and participate in internationally recognised programs.

For Surendran, what started as an opportunity to participate in open-source projects at the campus level, has now become an opportunity to contribute to a global technology initiative backed by the United Nations. His story shows how regular participation in open-source communities can create opportunities for meaningful international collaborations.

Amrita congratulates KK Surendran on this achievement and looks forward to the contributions he will make to the worldwide open source and technology community through this assignment.
