Nurse Day InaugurationJanuary 25 is globally celebrated as Intravenous Nurse Day, a day that acknowledges and honors the services of the nursing community committed to safe infusion practices.

IV Nurses – With You Every Step of the Way was the motto of this year’s IV Nurse Day, celebrated by the nursing department at Amrita’s Health Sciences campus.

The celebration was inaugurated Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director, Bri. Sai Bala, Chief Nursing Officer and Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Medical Superintendent.

The same dignitaries also felicitated the IV Team constituted during the occasion; a team of 20 members from different areas of nursing.

“The IV team will act as a resource unit for all IV related concerns in the institution,” declared Bri. Sai Bala, in her address.

Stating that the team will initially focus on conducting audits for ensuring best practices in IV therapy as well as hands-on training in peripheral IV cannulation, she stated that later the scope of the team would be expanded to monitoring and ensuring safe infusion therapy with evidence-based practices as the back bone.

Sai Bala Talk

Industry partners from 3M and Becton, Dickinson and Co. were honored for their support and guidance in safety matters in IV therapy in the institution.

A scientific presentation by Bri. Sai Bala on the effectiveness of a two-day training program on IV therapy for nurses followed. The presentation also included an analysis of the self reporting system on complications of IV therapy.

The study showed a strong positive correlation between the two-day workshop and decreasing incidents of IV complications like thrombophlebitis and infiltration.

Nurse Day Competition WinnersAnother highlight of the program was the inauguration of the hobby center for nurses. There were exhibitions of ornaments that nurses had crafted with their own hands.

The hobby center is now open to members of the nursing community to develop their artistic skills in making ornaments, paintings, craft works and the like.

The team from the surgical ICU won the first prize in a brainstorming quiz that was part of the program.

Clearly IV Nurse Day 2011 made a strong impact on the nursing community at Amrita.
