Research Interest: Optical, Microwave, Hyperspectral and Night Time Remote Sensing, Spectral Studies of Minerals, Metals and Plants, Change Analysis, Urban Heat Island, Forensic GIS, Crime mapping, Cryosphere Remote Sensing, Land Deformation, Disaster Research, River Morphometry and Planetary Research (Martian and Lunar Remote Sensing).

Bio

Dr. Sumith has over ten years of experience in the field of Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics. Presently he serves as an Assistant Professor in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems, especially Advanced Remote Sensing for Terrestrial Information Extraction and Applications at the Department of Chemistry, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus, Kerala. His research interests involve monitoring and analyzing extremely high-resolution remote sensing images for natural and man-made resource management. He has more than ten years of expertise in working with processing geospatial images obtained from Multispectral, Hyperspectral, and Microwave (SAR) sensors and obtained from a variety of platforms, including satellite, airborne, ground-based, drone/UAV, and mobile platforms. He graduated in Electronics from the University of Kerala and received a master’s degree in Information Technology and Computer Communication from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, with a University Rank and a Doctorate in Physical Sciences (Satellite Remote Sensing and GIS) from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

The Interdisciplinary team (Research X -Earth Observation Research Group) led by him is presently working in the area of advanced remote sensing and space-based applications for natural resource monitoring and management. In addition to providing coordination, technical guidance, and support for the use of geospatial data and technologies in academics, research/developments, government departments, and e-governance, his research group enhances coordination and information sharing on Geographic Information System (GIS) initiatives among humanitarian, development, and peace-focused actors.
