Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Holds Convocation Ceremony at Kochi Campus

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham conducted its convocation ceremony for students from its Amritapuri, Kochi, Chennai, Ettimadai, Bengaluru and Mysuru campuses at the Kochi campus. More than 1,000 students received their degrees across disciplines, including Dental Sciences, Medicine, Ayurveda, Nursing, Architecture, Arts, Humanities and Commerce, Allied Health Sciences and Engineering. The two-day convocation ceremony conferred degrees on undergraduate, postgraduate, and research scholars from various faculties. Medals were also awarded to rank holders in recognition of their academic excellence. Swami Poornamritanandapuri, General Secretary of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, delivered the benediction address. A message from the Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, was read out during the ceremony. In her message, Amma reminded students that there is no limit to acquiring knowledge and emphasised that the true purpose of education is to recognise and nurture one’s inner potential. Dr. S. AI Safety Conclave at Amrita Releases White Paper on Ethical and Safe AI for the Global South

Amrita reaffirms its leadership in responsible and human-centric artificial intelligence through its AI Safety Research Lab. A landmark white paper titled “Principles for Ethical and Safe Agentic AI Orchestration Across Infrastructure Gradients – Safety Guidelines for Critical Sectors in India and the Global South” was released during the AI Safety Conclave – ‘ Safe AI Global South’. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is proud to announce that Dr. Maneesha Vinodini Ramesh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, has been appointed as an Editor of Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS), a leading Q1 international journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). The appointment is for a three-year term and reflects the global recognition of Dr. Maneesha’s contributions to disaster resilience, early warning systems, geospatial technologies, and multi-hazard risk research. NHESS is one of the nineteen open-access journals of the European Geosciences Union published by Copernicus Publications. It operates a unique open discussion and transparent peer-review model, where submitted manuscripts appear first as preprints on EGUsphere. Drug Resistance Threat Deepens, AMR NEXT 2025 at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad Witness National and Global Expertise

The two-day conclave gathers together global health leaders, policy makers, scientists, and innovators to strengthen India’s response to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). As antimicrobial resistance accelerates at an unprecedented pace, threatening to undo decades of medical advancement, the two-day national conclave, AMR NEXT 2025, on the theme “Transformative Strategies to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance: For a Safer Tomorrow”, got underway at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad. The conference, held from November 29-30, saw several top leaders from government, public health, academia, biotechnology, and international institutions come together to drive solutions within the rapidly evolving AMR landscape of India. India continues to bear some of the world’s highest burdens of bacterial infections. Recent findings from national surveillance have revealed continuing resistance in E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Although ICMR’s latest data indicate a modest improvement in E. coli susceptibility to ceftazidime-from 19.2% in 2023 to 27.5% in 2024-experts caution that rising resistance to critical drugs such as carbapenems and colistin remains deeply concerning-a signal that frontline treatment options are rapidly narrowing. Expanding the Future of Medical Science at Amrita School of Medicine

A milestone has been achieved by the Amrita School of Medicine, Faridabad, with the announcement of a major expansion in specialisations for postgraduate medical programs. This has shifted Amrita’s position as one of India’s fastest-growing centres for advanced medical education. The institution thus proposes to add a number of new MD and MS specialities in order to cater to the growing demand for highly skilled medical personnel in key clinical and preclinical disciplines. The added seats from high-priority departments include 61 seats in total, 13 specialties in the MD program and 6 in MS programs in the Faridabad campus and 21 Specialties in the MD training and 5 in the MS program at the Kochi Campus (Read More). This expansion has provided Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, with a more comprehensive portfolio of MD and MS programs, with updated curricula, modern simulation-based training, and 24×7 clinical exposure in one of India’s biggest multi-specialty hospitals. Amrita Strengthens Global Academic Presence with New Partnership in France

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has signed a memorandum of agreement with École Centrale de Nantes for academic degrees, cooperation, student and faculty exchanges & joint research. The MoU was signed by Prof. Jean-Baptiste Avrillier, Director, Ecole Centrale de Nantes with Prof. Maneesha Ramesh, Amrita Pro Vice Chancellor on November 5, 2025. The cooperation between the Universities will focus on: Developing joint degree programs and internships Establishing faculty and student exchanges Conducting joint research programmes; Organize collaborative efforts Both Universities will be launching dual bachelors and joint masters degrees through which Amrita students can get dual undergraduate degrees and a joint master’s degree. The Centrale Nantes is a grande école – a French engineering school – established in 1919 and is ranked the 7th best in France. Amrita Strengthens Global Academic Presence with Two New Partnerships in Italy

On the occasion of Amma’s program in Piacenza, Italy, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham took major steps towards international collaboration through two important academic agreements. The Memorandums of Understanding were inked in the divine presence of Amma as Chancellor. ​ One of the MoUs is with the Govt of Italy’s premier scientific institution: the National Research Council (CNR). Amrita will collaborate with its Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI). The agreement was signed by Dr Maneesha V. Ramesh, Amrita’s Pro Vice Chancellor, and Dr Tommaso Moramarco, Director, IRPI. Although a scientist, Dr Tommaso Moramarco shared how this first meeting with Amma left him in wonder on a deeply spiritual level. “Thank you for giving me a completely new experience. The Voice of India at the Civil 20 South Africa Summit

Guided by Amma’s vision, India’s voice resonated strongly at the Civil 20 South Africa Summit through the address of Amrita’s Dr Krishnashree Achuthan. She spoke on behalf of Civil 20 India for which Amma was the Hon’ble Chair during India’s G20 Presidency 2023. Dr Krishnashree presented the concept of global equality shaped by compassion, collective wisdom and civil society leadership. She highlighted how the world should go beyond just discussion and implement shared values into concrete policies that will uplift the vulnerable and strengthen social justice. She shared how India’s Civil 20 became one of the most inclusive in G20 history, engaging over 6000 civil society organisations (CSOs) from 154 countries. Amrita Health Sciences Campus, Kochi, has been honored by the Indian Pharmacopoeia, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, for its outstanding contribution to the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI). The Regional Training Centre (RTC) and Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring Centre at Amrita received the Certificate of Appreciation for the financial year 2024–25, marking the third consecutive year of national recognition for excellence in pharmacovigilance. Amrita School of Ayurveda Secures Second Position in National Ranking

The Amrita School of Ayurveda, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the second position in India in the Framework Assessment and Rating of Ayurveda Colleges conducted by the Quality Council of India (QCI) under the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) for the 2025–26 academic year. The institution earned an “A” grade, marking a significant leap from its 13th position in the previous year’s rankings. Dr. Maneesha V Ramesh, Amrita’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, represented the university at the National CSR Conference held in New Delhi October 6-7, 2025, alongside distinguished government officials, corporates, development practitioners, and tribal entrepreneurs from across the country. This year’s theme was “Leveraging CSR Excellence for Tribal Development”, focusing on how corporate social responsibility can be meaningfully channelled to support India’s indigenous communities. Dr Maneesha underscored trust-building, long-term commitment, and multi-stakeholder engagement as the foundations of sustainable community empowerment. Globally, at least 2.2 billion people experience near or distance vision impairment. As of 2022, approximately 4.95 million people in India are blind, which represents about 0.36% of the total population. Most video and audio content are not accessible to the blind, deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) people. To address this gap, the ChalaChitra Vaachana is an innovative audio description platform designed to improve the accessibility of visual content by automatically generating audio descriptions. ChalaChitra Vaachana offers user-friendly web and mobile interfaces for generating intelligent audio descriptions. These descriptions are translated into Indian Sign Language (ISL) videos. The platform utilizes advanced AI models to accurately interpret scenes in videos. It supports a wide range of video formats and generates precise and detailed descriptions. The platform supports various output formats and includes features that enable content creators to review and edit descriptions. The project aligns with UN SDGs making educational content more accessible (SDG 4) and bridges existing accessibility gaps (SDG 10). Funded by Rashtriya Ayurved Vidyapeeth, Ministry of AYUSH, the Ayurveda Clinical e-Learning (AYURCeL) project aims to create a web platform to showcase the clinical experiences of successful Ayurveda clinicians in a digital form and format that will facilitate continuous clinical learning based on well-documented case studies. The concept of this clinical e-learning platform, jointly developed by the Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda (ĀCĀRA) and Amrita CREATE, is to develop such an interface in which the real clinical experiences of physicians will be collected, converted into data, and arranged in a structured manner to create an interactive learning environment. The selected cases and the web platform will undergo a rigorous review by an expert team. ​Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham recently joined an International Consortium and won a grant for the project titled,‘Landslide Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment, Preparedness and Early Warning in South Asia: Integrating Meteorology, Landscape and Society (LANDSLIP).’ The project is funded by the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) and the Department for International Development (DFID), UK, under the Science for Humanitarian Emergencies and Resilience (SHEAR) programme. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham partnered with the British Geological Survey, King’s College London, MetOffice, National Research Council CNR – Italy, the Geological Survey of India, Newcastle University, Practical Action Consulting Ltd. and Practical Action Consulting, Nepal, for this project.  The project aims to contribute to better landslide multi-hazard risk assessment, early-warning, and working with communities for better preparedness, for hydrologically controlled landslide and landslide related hazards on a regional spatial scale and on a seasonal to daily temporal scale in India. Amrita Wireless Sensor Network for Landslide Detection System for Himalayas

This project is to study the feasibility for deploying an integrated real-time landslide monitoring and detection system using emerging wireless sensor network technology. The landslide monitoring and detection system will be used for the detection and early warning of rainfall-induced landslides, in three landslide prone areas in the Himalayas, India.  The Wireless Sensor Network for real-time landslide monitoring & detection, which has been functioning in Munnar since 2008, proved its capability when it issued a real-time landslide warning in July 2009. The Government of India have expressed interest in deploying it in other landslide-prone areas, including the rest of Kerala, Himalayan region and Maharashtra. In fact, R Chidambaram, principal scientific advisor to Government of India, visited the deployment site at Munnar with the intention of replicating the system in Northern parts of India. Regulation of Inflammation by Natural Product extracts: Role in osteoclastogenesis

Inflammation is the body’s endeavor at self-defense, the intent being to eradicate harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, or pathogens and begin the healing process.  It is one of the major steps in normal wound healing process with overlapping events such as formation of granulation tissue, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling. However, chronic inflammation can also lead to a host of diseases. Thus the inflammatory response plays a key role in both health protection and disease generation. Osteoclasts are the multinuclear cells specialized for bone resorption, playing a crucial role in bone remodeling. Osteoclasts have been known to differentiate from hematopoietic precursors of the monocyte/macrophage lineage in the presence of macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF or CSF-1) and receptor activator of ΝF-κΒ ligand (RANKL). Inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) or tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), as well as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) have been reported to induce osteoclast formation indirectly by stimulating osteoblasts. Chronic inflammation can lead to an abnormal increase in osteoclastic bone resorption and excessive bone destruction as observed in osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontal disease (PD) etc. The use of herbal or natural medicines for the management of diverse disorders has an extensive and widespread history. Development of a Lab-on-a-Chip (LoC) for detection of Glucose, Cholesterol and Kidney Function

The proposed work envisages the fabrication of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip (LOC) module for non-enzymatic sensing of glucose, cholesterol and creatinine using a single device. This consists of a disposable LOC and a non-disposable electronics module. The use of non-enzymatic sensing module helps to achieve longer shelf life, eliminating the need for stringent storage conditions. This reduces the cost and time of analysis considerably. The point of care diagnostic device provides an effective alternative for the existing expensive and time consuming clinical analysis performed by a trained clinical lab technician. This would thereby enable access to low-cost medical diagnostics even to underprivileged sections of the society.

Quorum Sensing and Biofilm Formation in Microbial Pathogenesis

When encountering a new host, every potential microbial pathogen can stay, acquire nutrients, colonize and then seek another host.  Alternatively the pathogen could express its full battery of virulence factors, and invade the host. The successful attack of a host is now understood to be a communal process called Quorum Sensing (QS). Utilizing QS, pathogens employ a series of chemical signals and sensing systems that jointly engage bacteria to switch from acting as individual cells to operating in a concerted multicellular fashion. QS is the capacity to detect extracellular, small-molecule signals and to subsequently alter gene expression in response to bacterial population densities. The QS systems of bacteria are now known to serve a wide variety of functions beyond a simple estimate of cell density. Some of the processes controlled by QS include bioluminescence and expression of virulence factor(s). Furthermore, QS also plays a pivotal role in the production of healthy and fully developed biofilms which are complex and stable multi-layered structures with defined architecture, in which bacterial communities exist in a sessile form.Many gram positive and gram negative pathogenic bacteria uses QS to control virulence and biofilm formation.
