ISRO Chairman Urges Amrita Graduates to Harness Technology for Nation-Building

ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space, Dr. V. Narayanan urged graduating engineers to use their knowledge, technological skills and innovation to contribute to India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, while addressing the fourth Convocation Ceremony of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Chennai Campus.

Calling convocation a “defining milestone” rather than merely a ceremonial event, Dr. Narayanan said graduates were entering a new phase of life carrying greater responsibility towards society and the nation. “The India of tomorrow will be shaped by your ideas, skills, and determination. Ask yourself: what problem will you solve? What technology will you create? What service will you do for society?” he said. He urged students to embrace lifelong learning, aim high, develop leadership and teamwork, use emerging technologies responsibly, and give back to society.

The ceremony for the 2022–26 B.Tech batch was held at the campus Convocation Hall and was presided over by Swami Ramakrishnananda Puri, Trustee, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Saravanan Muthaiyan, Chief Information Officer, Zoho Corporation, and Jayashankar Unnithan, Managing Director, Shankar Sealing Systems Pvt. Ltd., attended as Guests of Honour. Chancellor Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) addressed the graduating students through a video message. Degrees and medals were presented to graduating and meritorious students in the presence of university officials, faculty members, parents and other dignitaries.

Addressing concerns over the impact of Artificial Intelligence on employment, Saravanan Muthaiyan said AI should be viewed as a tool that complements rather than replaces human capability. “AI will handle the routine; you will provide the direction, ethics, and human touch,” he said. He also stressed the growing importance of cybersecurity and urged graduates not to measure success solely by salaries or job titles, but by the impact their work creates for society.

Jayashankar Unnithan called upon graduates to combine technological competence with integrity, curiosity and a spirit of service. “Technology can change the world, but human values decide whether we change it for the better,” he said. Encouraging students to become creators of technology, enterprises, employment and solutions, he added, “The future is not something you enter; the future is something you create.”

The convocation concluded with the graduates taking the university oath, committing themselves to uphold the ideals of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and to serve India, humanity and nature with love, trust, tolerance and humility.
