AIMS is part of the Health Sciences campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the highest grade of A++.
In the twenty-two years since its inception, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) has grown from a 115 bed specialty hospital to a 1100-bed (490 units) super-specialty tertiary care health center with an attached medical college hospital. On the 17th of May 1998, AIMS was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of Her Holiness, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences is the adjunct to the term “new universalism” coined by the World Health Organization. This massive healthcare infrastructure with over 3, 330, 000 sq. ft. of built-up area spread over 125 acres of land supports a daily patient volume of about 3500 outpatients with 95 percent inpatient occupancy. Annual patient turnover touches an incredible figure of over 10 lakh outpatients and more than 70,000 inpatients.
The hospital has received the ISO 9001-2008 accreditation. It also enjoys accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its laboratories and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) for the hospital overall. AIMS is part of the Health Sciences campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the highest grade of A++.
At the Health Sciences campus, the Amrita School of Medicine, the Amrita Center for Nano sciences, the Amrita School of Dentistry, the Amrita College of Nursing and the Amrita School of Pharmacy are co-located with AIMS. Committed to providing value-based medical education, these educational institutions strive to instill the qualities of dedication and service in the youth. The Amrita School of Ayurveda located at Amritapuri complements the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s medical competencies in both modern and traditional ways.
The hospital’s extensive infrastructure offers facilities comprising 28 modern operating theatres, 275 equipped intensive-care beds, a fully computerized and networked Hospital Information System (HIS), a fully digital radiology department, 17 NABL accredited clinical laboratories and 24/7 telemedicine service. There are a total of 45 departments, including 12 super-specialty ones. It was the first institution in South East Asia to begin using a fully digital imaging service; its radiology department is completely online.
The AIMS team comprises physicians, surgeons and other healthcare professionals of the highest caliber. There are over 650 faculty members and more than 4500 staff members. Its network supports more over 3000 computers, digitizing nearly every aspect of patient care, including all patient information, lab testing and radiological imaging. The tele connectivity provides AIMS a direct link to 36 remote centers in, 32 in the African subcontinent and 6 in other countries. AIMS offers a total and comprehensive healthcare solution comparable to the best hospitals in the world. The most recent additions are the DA VINCI SURGICAL ROBOTIC SYSTEM; ROSA, the latest generation in robotic neurosurgery assistance; the MAKO ROBOTIC-ARM ASSISTED TECHNOLOGY which is transforming the way joint replacement surgeries are being performed; a Cyber Knife M6 and Tomotherapy for the most precise radiotherapy available today; the GE Voluson E10 4D ultrasound system for spectacular 2D and 3D/4D images; a Philips 256 slice iCT scanner; and the Digital Pathology Solution, a virtual microscope which digitizes lab slides which more accurately help clinicians in better, faster, cheaper diagnosis and prediction of diseases.
In March 2018, a state-of-the-art PET-3Tesla MRI scanner was installed in our Nuclear medicine department. It provides superior diagnostic information for patients with cancer, ischemic heart disease and certain neurologic conditions. In the three decades since its development, PET has been demonstrated to be a clinically proven and safe method for imaging a variety of disorders. By performing two exams at once – rather than sequential MR and PET exams – we can shorten acquisition times by up to 50%. Not only does this boost workflow, productivity and efficiency, but can reduce costs, may lead to faster diagnoses and ensure patient and staff satisfaction. It also means faster results for referring physicians.
