In the twenty-two years since its inception, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) has grown from a 115 bed specialty hospital to a 1100-bed (490 units) super-specialty tertiary care health center with an attached medical college hospital. On the 17th of May 1998, AIMS was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of Her Holiness, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences is the adjunct to the term “new universalism” coined by the World Health Organization. This massive healthcare infrastructure with over 3, 330, 000 sq. ft. of built-up area spread over 125 acres of land supports a daily patient volume of about 3500 outpatients with 95 percent inpatient occupancy. Annual patient turnover touches an incredible figure of over 10 lakh outpatients and more than 70,000 inpatients.

In March 2018, a state-of-the-art PET-3Tesla MRI scanner was installed in our Nuclear medicine department. It provides superior diagnostic information for patients with cancer, ischemic heart disease and certain neurologic conditions. In the three decades since its development, PET has been demonstrated to be a clinically proven and safe method for imaging a variety of disorders. By performing two exams at once – rather than sequential MR and PET exams – we can shorten acquisition times by up to 50%. Not only does this boost workflow, productivity and efficiency, but can reduce costs, may lead to faster diagnoses and ensure patient and staff satisfaction. It also means faster results for referring physicians.
