Bio

Dr. Aravind Madhavan is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the School of Biotechnology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. He joined the institution in 2022, transitioning from the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), where he held the prestigious ICMR–DHR Young Scientist Fellowship. At RGCB, his research focused on the epigenetic regulation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in human macrophages, contributing significantly to the understanding of host-pathogen interactions.

Dr. Aravind completed his postdoctoral training at RGCB and was previously a Marie Curie Fellow under the European Union, during which he worked at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, and the University of Jaén, Spain. His work in Europe focused on engineering microbial cell factories, applying genetic and metabolic engineering tools in yeast and filamentous fungi for the production of high-value bioproducts. He earned his Ph.D. from the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, with a specialization in the genetic and metabolic engineering of filamentous fungi for the production of therapeutically important proteins.

Dr. Aravind has authored or co-authored over 75 scientific publications and presentations, with an h-index of 30, reflecting his impactful contributions to microbial biotechnology and host-pathogen research. He has received numerous national and international recognitions, including:

  • Marie Curie Fellowship (European Union)
  • AIST Visiting Fellowship, Japan
  • DHR-ICMR Young Scientist Fellowship
  • DST-SERB National Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • DBT Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Kerala Biotech Commission Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • BRSI-MKU Genomics Award (2021)
  • DST-INSPIRE Fellowship
  • KSCSTE Research Fellowship
  • CSIR-UGC JRF, GATE
  • Gold Medal for First Rank in MSc Biotechnology
  • Best Poster Award (NHBT-2016)

He serves as an Editorial Board Member for Springer Nature’s Systems Microbiology and Biomanufacturing, and is an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology and a Guest Associate Editor for Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. He is also an active peer reviewer for over 25 SCI-indexed journals.

Dr. Aravind has successfully led and contributed to multiple nationally funded research projects from DBT, DST-SERB, ICMR-DHR, and state-level funding agencies.

Current Research Focus:

Dr. Aravind’s current research aims to develop host-directed therapeutic strategies to combat infections caused by Mycobacteria and Klebsiella pneumoniae. His lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, with particular emphasis on:

  • Immune evasion strategies
  • Macrophage and epithelial cell reprogramming
  • Epigenetic regulation during infection
  • Autophagy and cell death pathways

By integrating translational immunology, functional genomics, and microbial pathogenesis, his research aspires to identify novel host targets and therapeutic avenues to tackle drug-resistant bacterial infections

Research

Our current research focuses on developing host-directed therapeutic strategies to combat infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Klebsiella pneumoniae. We investigate the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, with a particular emphasis on:

  • Immune evasion strategies employed by pathogens
  • Macrophage polarization and functional reprogramming during infection
  • Modulation of epithelial cell responses
  • Epigenetic regulation of host immunity
  • The roles of autophagy, pyroptosis, and other cell death pathways in shaping infection outcomes
  • Identification of novel host targets for therapeutic interventions

By integrating tools from translational immunology, functional genomics, and microbial pathogenesis, our research aims to identify novel host targets and immune-regulatory mechanisms that can be leveraged to develop effective interventions against drug-resistant bacterial infections.
