Vimala Akka’s Journey Reflects the Power of Women-Led Coastal Transformation
In my experience, when I speak to the seaweed daily, it grows faster and stronger,” says Vimala Akka with a smile — a reflection of the deep connection she has developed with the ocean, her work, and the future she is building for her family. For Vimala Akka, a coastal woman from Tamil Nadu, seaweed cultivation has become far more than a source of income. It has evolved into a journey of confidence, leadership, environmental awareness, and hope. Two years ago, Vimala’s family depended largely on seasonal and unpredictable wild seaweed collection, along with small household activities, to support their livelihood. Income opportunities were limited, and financial security remained uncertain.
Her life began to change after joining the Blue is the New Pink initiative led by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality. Through continuous training, mentorship, and community engagement, Vimala gradually transformed from a participant into an active seaweed farmer, community motivator, and aspiring entrepreneur. Today, she plays a leading role in encouraging women from nearby coastal communities to participate in seaweed cultivation training programs and explore sustainable aquaculture practices as a pathway toward economic resilience. She regularly organizes local meetings and motivates families to consider marine-based livelihoods that are both environmentally sustainable and socially empowering.
Recently, Vimala completed specialized training in value-added seaweed products and now dreams of producing and marketing seaweed pickle and other seaweed-based products across Tamil Nadu. Her entrepreneurial aspirations represent a growing movement among coastal women who are redefining livelihoods through innovation and community-based sustainability. Beyond economic empowerment, Vimala says the initiative has helped her gain a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems, ocean conservation, and the importance of protecting coastal environments for future generations. Her story reflects the transformative impact of women-led grassroots development initiatives that combine livelihood generation, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment. Stories like Vimala Akka’s remain central to the vision behind Blue is the New Pink — an initiative focused on empowering coastal women and communities through long-term support, skill development, and sustainable opportunities.
From swimming lessons conducted with Olympic swimmers and elite coast guards, to culinary workshops with celebrity chefs, industry-oriented training in seaweed cultivation and value-added production, and continuous community engagement activities, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality, and AMMACHI Labs continue to work alongside coastal communities to build sustainable and resilient futures. The Ocean Farming projects in Tamil Nadu are implemented by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in partnership with Esri, United Nations Development Programme, the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, GEF Small Grants Programme, Transworld, and TERI – The Energy and Resources Institute.
