About

The Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at Amrita School of Medicine is a pioneering centre that bridges medicine, law, and justice. It focuses on the scientific application of medical knowledge for the investigation of crime, sudden death, and medico-legal issues, nurturing doctors who are as skilled in compassion as they are in precision. Besides this, the department also provides poison information service to doctors and the lay public free of cost, and facilitates the analysis of body fluid samples from poisoned patients admitted to various hospitals across Kerala and beyond, for accurate diagnosis and management.

As the only private medical institution in Kerala authorized by the Government to conduct medico-legal autopsies, the department stands as a model of excellence in forensic education and practice. It integrates Forensic Pathology, Clinical Forensics, and Toxicology—the three core areas defined by the National Medical Commission—within a single comprehensive academic and service framework. The Department houses a state-of-the-art Autopsy Facility, a WHO-listed Poison Control Centre, and an NABL-accredited Analytical Toxicology Laboratory, all of which support clinical service, research, and education. Faculty members regularly provide expert opinions to investigating agencies including the Crime Branch, C.I.D., and C.B.I., underscoring Amrita’s national reputation for credibility and scientific integrity in medico-legal practice.
