Syllabus
Unit 1
Linux architecture and system structure, boot process overview, shell environment and command-line usage, filesystem hierarchy, file and directory operations, links, file search utilities, text processing tools, editing files using command-line editors, accessing documentation and help systems, secure remote access using SSH, SSHkey-based authentication, secure file transfer.
Unit 2
User and group management, password policies, privilege escalation, file ownership and permissions, special permissions (SUID, SGID, sticky bit), access control lists (ACLs), process monitoring and control
Unit 3
Software installation and updates, package management concepts, managing repositories, process lifecycle and job control, system performance monitoring, system services and startup targets, task scheduling using cron and timers, system logging and time synchronization.
Unit 4
Disk partitioning and file systems, filesystem checking and repair, mounting and unmounting file systems, persistent mounts, swap space management, logical volume management (LVM), network configuration basics, network file systems, NFS mounting and usage.
Unit 5
Linux security principles, firewall configuration, SELinux architecture, modes, contexts, booleans, and troubleshooting, container concepts, container deployment and management using Podman, running containers as system services, boot troubleshooting, password recovery, filesystem repair.

Objectives and Outcomes
Course Objectives
This course aims to introduce students to the administration and management of Linux-based operating systems used in enterprise environments. It focuses on developing strong command-line skills, system configuration abilities, and extensive hands-on experience required to manage, secure, and troubleshoot Linux systems. The course emphasizes storage management, networking, security mechanisms, and remote system administration to prepare students for performance-based system administration assessments.
