ASF Celebrates World Environment Day 2026 with Focus on Climate Action and Sustainability

The Amrita School for Sustainable Futures (ASF), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, marked World Environment Day 2026 with a vibrant programme centered on the theme “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future.” The event brought together 54 students and teachers from Amrita Vidyalayam, Puthiyakavu, along with ASF faculty members, research scholars, and staff.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Ravishankar, Principal, ASF, who highlighted the importance of fostering environmental stewardship among younger generations. The chief guest, Er. Bincy B. S., Environmental Engineer at the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, delivered an insightful address on environmental protection, waste management, environmental regulations, Green Protocol, and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). She encouraged students to take an active role as climate communicators and environmental ambassadors in their communities.

A special session by Dr. Amritesh AR, Assistant Professor, focused on the ecological significance of sacred groves and their role in biodiversity conservation. The occasion also witnessed the launch of the Sacred Grove Platform for Kerala, an initiative aimed at promoting awareness, conservation, and documentation of the state’s sacred groves.

As part of the celebrations, students participated in a series of hands-on group activities addressing pressing environmental challenges such as plastic pollution, shrinking green spaces, water scarcity, excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, urban flooding, and human-animal conflict. Through discussions and presentations, participants proposed innovative and practical solutions to these issues.

The event also featured a visit to the University’s Sustainable Solid Waste Management Centre, where students learned about waste management practices, resource recovery systems, and sustainable approaches to environmental protection.

Reflecting on the experience, Anagha S., a student participant from Amrita Vidyalayam, Puthiyakavu, said, “The sessions helped us understand how environmental challenges are connected to our daily lives. The activities encouraged us to think of practical solutions, and I feel inspired to take small but meaningful actions to protect the environment and spread awareness among my peers.”

The programme concluded with student presentations, prize distribution, and the distribution of saplings, reinforcing the message of environmental responsibility and collective action for a sustainable future.
