Department of Physics was established in the institution in 2002 as a supporting Department to cater to the academic requirements of I & II semester B.E students of Vishweswaraya Technological University with 2 faculty and one supporting staff. In the year 2004, the Department was brought under Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and upgraded to the requirements of the new curriculum. The Department has grown and presently it has a team of five Postgraduate faculty with two of the faculty member having Doctoral degree.

The Department offers various courses to 1st year, 2nd year and 3rd year students. The purpose of the 1st year course is to introduce the B. Tech. students to the various aspects of Physics which would rather help them in understanding their Engineering subjects. It comprises of topics from quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, relativity, etc.

The Department also offers elective Subjects for higher semesters. The faculty members are motivated constantly to provide high quality teaching in tune with developments in the field of Science & Technology.

Faculty members are frequently encouraged to update their knowledge by attending Conferences/Seminars/Workshops and other Faculty Development Programs that are in tune with developments in the field of Science & Technology. The Department strives to provide a conducive environment that motivates staff members to engage in research in their respective areas of expertise. Three faculty members of the Department with postgraduate degree are registered under Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham for their doctoral degree. The faculty of the department carry out research activities in diverse fields like Quantum Mechanic problems, electronically and Ionically conducting polymers, Active Galaxies and Monte-Carlo Simulations.

The Physics lab supports teaching physics lab course to the I year B. Tech. students. It also supports basic research in physics and chemistry.

VYOM

"VYOM" - The Astrophysics club is an initiation in the direction of setting up a platform to promote Astrophysics, Astronomy and related fields among the young Amritians.It was started in the first week of March 2013. This club aims at encouraging students to develop and nurture their acumen in space research which will impart new career seeking dimensions to students.The club brings forth an opportunity of learning about space technology to all interested with exciting events and activities.

  1. Inter University Accelerator Center, New Delhi  has granted beam time for irradiation effect on dye sensitized solar cell to Dr. Praveen D.

  2. Dr. Praveen D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physics,received a project funding of about 5.45 lakhs by Vision Group of Science and Technology, Karnataka Government. The title of the proposal is "Studies on cathode materials for all solid state batteries". The project is sanctioned under Seed Money for Young Scientist Research Scheme.

  3. Dr. Praveen D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physics,defended his project proposal for Beam time and student funding in Inter University Accelerator Center, New Delhi in December 2013. The proposal is under review and the result of the proposal is expected in the end of January.
