AMMACHI Labs team along with Amrita SeRVe and Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Manglore, introduced a machine that makes Areca nut plates in Byse village of Karnataka. These eco friendly and biodegradable nut plates are made from the leaves fallen from Areca nut trees. The production of these plates comes in two sizes- 10” & 4.5″. This initiative is expected to generate income for the women in Byse and be a suitable replacement for the widely used plastic plates. The team from Amrita has successfully completed the skill training for the women in Byse village.
Amrita RITE organised a Amrita Bala Kendra summer camp for the village children at the Mothakkara ashram in Wayanad on 29th April, 2017. Around 70 tribal students from Class 1 to 10, from 7 tribal colonies attended the camp.
As an effort of implementing the vision of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, (Amma), staff and students of Amrita Center for Wireless Networks & Applications (Amrita WNA) organized “Vishuthaineettam” for the 3rd year in a row. For many villagers in India, collecting and carrying water is part of their daily routine. However, villagers often have to walk several kilometers to collect water necessary for themselves and their families, sometimes walking several times a day. Many villagers, especially women, collect and carry between 200 and 500 liters of water per day for their families and cattle.
Many villages in India do not have access to electricity. Villages that do receive power, do so intermittently and with frequent disruption, making the supply of electricity unreliable. Komalikudi, a tribal settlement in Kerala well-known for its abundant natural resources, is one such village.
Five years ago, a group of socially committed Amritians decided to conduct a cycle rally. This September 22nd, 2015 marked its 5th prolific edition. In the current juncture when the world is finding it difficult to cope with escalating air pollution, the event was really relevant. September 22nd is celebrated as “world car free day” and as a part of it, Amrita Sanjeevani, the seva organisation at Amritapuri Campus, conducted a cycle rally and 10 km fun run from Karunagapally to Amritapuri.
