Summary
    1. Separation of Binary Mixtures

Includes separation, preliminary investigations, determinations of saturation / unsaturation, detection of elements by Lassaigne’s test, functional group identification, derivative preparation, determination of melting points of the derivatives and calculation of Rf values from TLC

The following mixtures can be given:

      • Acid and hydrocarbon
      • Phenol and aldehyde
      • Phenol and acid
      • Phenol and amine
      • Acid and ester
      • Halo compound and aldehyde
      • Acid and aldehyde
      • Amine and aldehyde
      • Amine and ketone
      • Alcohol and hydrocarbon
    2. Thin layer chromatography to determine Rf values of compounds
      • 2-nitro aniline
      • 4-nitro aniline
      • Cinnamic acid and 2-nitro aniline
      • Acetophenone
      • Ethylbenzoate
    3. Simple column chromatography to separate the components of binary mixtures
      • Hydrocarbon and ester
      • Aldehyde and amine

Course Outcome:

  • CO01: Separation and identification of organic compounds in binary mixtures using classical qualitative analysis techniques.
  • CO02: Determine functional groups, prepare derivatives, and evaluate purity through melting point and TLC analysis.
  • O03: Apply chromatographic techniques, including thin layer and simple column chromatography, for effective separation and analysis of organic compounds
