Amrita College of Nursing and the Nursing Department at Faridabad campus marked International Nurses Day 2026 with a week-long program of academic, cultural, and professional activities with the theme of the International Council of Nurses for the year “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
Celebrated every year on 12th May to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, these celebrations saw participation from nursing students, faculty, medical practitioners, and other health care professionals as well as hospital personnel.
The celebrations commenced with various intra-house competition activities involving the students of nursing from the Agni, Jalam, Prithvi, and Vaayu houses. These include the extempore contest to improve public speaking skills and the graffiti board competition to allow for creative expression of the theme for Nurses’ Day.
The main celebration was titled “Altruista 2026: Beyond Limits” and took place on May 12th in the Amriteshwari Auditorium. Planned by the SNAI Programme Committee of Amrita College of Nursing, it involved various cultural acts, presentations of the annual council, competitions based on theme, and awards to student achievements in various national and inter-college events.
Delivering her speech at the occasion, Dr. Lekha Vishwanath, Principal of Amrita College of Nursing, stressed on the need for empowering nurses and building compassionate practice in health care. The programme also comprised the launch of a midwifery awareness video and themed performances on the basis of the 10 Rights of Medication Administration.
The official celebration for Nurses’ Day for the Nursing Department of Amrita Hospital took place on May 16 at the Amriteshwari Auditorium. The program started with a lighting of the lamp and nurses’ oath, which reiterates the principles of caring and services that the nursing profession stands for.
Some of the special addresses were made by Swami Nijamritananda Puri, Administrative Director, Amrita Hospital, Dr. Prem Kumar Nair, Group Medical Director, Amrita Hospitals, and Dr. Sanjeev K. Singh, Medical Director, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad.
One important aspect of the program was the panel discussion, in which some of the esteemed faculty members of Amrita College of Nursing highlighted the seven aspects of nursing empowerment proposed by the International Council of Nurses as well as the power of trust, profession, practice, proximity, peace, and care.
The day’s proceedings also saw speeches from Dr. Annie Kumar, National President of Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), and Mrs. Evelyn P. Kannan, Secretary-General of TNAI, both present in the capacity of Guest of Honour.
Nurses Week saw the organising of different cultural and clinical contests for nursing staff by the Nursing Department, like group dance presentations and simulation contests on CPR.
The day ended with a thank-you address by Ms. Maria Lazaro, Nursing Director, and Ms. Ritika Bisht, Clinical Educator, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad.
This week-long celebration was an expression of the shared resolve of Amrita College of Nursing and Amrita Hospital to appreciate the dedication and hard work put in by nurses and their contributions to healthcare services
